Frequently Asked Questions
What is OCRMyScreen?
OCRMyScreen is a free offline tool that uses Tesseract OCR to extract text directly from screenshots. It runs locally, providing high accuracy and full privacy.
Does it require an internet connection?
No. OCRMyScreen works entirely offline, ensuring your images and recognized text never leave your computer.
How do I take a screenshot for OCR?
After launching the app, use the tray icon or the keyboard shortcut (default: Ctrl + Shift + O) to select an area on your screen. The text will be instantly copied to your clipboard.
Where is the recognized text stored?
By default, recognized text is copied to your clipboard. A copy is also appended to the history.txt file in your program directory for reference.
How can I change the OCR settings?
Edit the config.txt file created beside the program executable. You can configure OCR language, DPI, page segmentation mode (PSM), and custom dictionaries.
Can I use other languages?
Yes. Download Tesseract language packs and place the traineddata files inside the tessdata folder. Then set ocr_language=LANGCODE in config.txt.
What do PSM and OEM mean?
PSM (Page Segmentation Mode) defines how Tesseract interprets layout — for example, single text line or block. OEM (OCR Engine Mode) controls which recognition engine Tesseract uses. Defaults are PSM=6 and OEM=3 for best balance.
My OCR results are inaccurate. How can I improve them?
Increase ocr_dpi to 300‑400, ensure good text contrast, and use the correct language model. You can also improve recognition by enabling user patterns or user words in the config file.
Where does the app store debug screenshots?
Captured screenshots are temporarily saved in the debugImages folder. You can delete these files anytime.
Is OCRMyScreen open source?
OCRMyScreen is built on open libraries like Tesseract and Dorkbox SystemTray. The main application source code may become open source in a future release.
